Your Guide to Pet Municipality Tags & Registration

If you’re wondering what the fuss is all about when it comes to municipality pet vaccination and registrations or find yourself unsure about this "tag" thing, let us step in and decode it for you. Does your pet really need one and if so, is it genuinely required immediately? Well, hold on to your fur, because we're about to unveil the mysteries of pet ownership in the UAE.

Let's begin by clearing one thing up right away – we're talking about local requirements for vaccinations and tags, not those fancy pet passports for globetrotting critters. Being a pet parent in this country comes with a guided set of dos and don’ts – allow us to guide you through it all.

Let’s begin with, what exactly is a municipality tag?

The elusive tag – it's like a tiny superhero cape for your pet. The municipality tag serves as an identification card, flaunting crucial details like your contact information, your pet's name and breed. It's their ticket back home if they ever decide to go on an unexpected solo adventure. So, embrace the tag, for it holds the power to reunite you with your furry sidekick.

Pets who haven't undergone the registration process may be placed in new homes or, in unfortunate cases, euthanized due to safety concerns.

In case you’re struggling with this, as an end-to-end pet relocation service provider, Sandy Paws can handle the complete process required to get your pet settled in for a flat fee of AED 400 that includes your pet being picked up and dropped off at your doorstep, us handling the paperwork and delivering the tag to you, too!  Should you require further support or have questions, reach our experts at bookings@sandypaws.ae to have them answered!

But is this tag mandatory for pet owners?

Mandatory? Absolutely! Think of it as your pet’s VIP Pass around the city, granting your four-legged companion the honor of being officially recognized by the authorities. It's the law of the land, so, don't ignore or delay this—make sure your fur baby is tagged and registered. The authorities take pet registration seriously to ensure the well-being of all animals in the city and maintain a record of pet ownership.

In simple words, getting your pet a municipality tag is as essential as belly rubs and treat time. It's not only mandatory but also ensures that your furry pal is recognized as a law-abiding citizen of Dubai. So, grab your pet's vaccination records, prepare for some administration, and embark on the quest for the coveted tag. Remember, a tagged pet is a safe pet!

But can I skip out on getting my pet an ID tag until later?

Well, well, well, it's tempting to be a rebel, isn't it? But here's the scoop: skipping out on the tag is a big no-no. Not only can it land you in a heap of legal trouble, but it also makes it trickier to prove ownership if your furball decides to embark on a little escapade of its own. Trust us, being a responsible pet parent is much cooler than being a tag-avoiding rebel.

So, how exactly do I get a municipality tag for my pet?

Easy, all you’d need to follow through is a simple registration process. Visit the Dubai Municipality, or an authorized veterinary clinic that offers registration services or you can also speak to us! Allow experts to guide you through the paperwork and help you navigate the wild terrain of pet registration. Make sure you carry proof of your ownership and the vaccination status of your pet as this will be needed. Once the paperwork has been completed, you will get an SMS that gives you your ID tag number!

And…what documents do I need to get this done?

It’s all in the paperwork and getting it right. First, you'll need your Emirates ID – the original card and a copy, your pet's vaccination records, a copy of your lease agreement or title deed showing your Dubai address, and any identification documents your pet might have, like a passport. Prepare the documents, and you’re set to get registered.

Use the below as a document checklist so you don’t end up missing anything out:

  • Your Emirates ID - original and copy
  • Your pet's vaccination records.
  • A copy of your lease agreement or title deed (for tenants and property owners, respectively)
  • Your pet's passport or other identification documents, if applicable
Are there any prerequisite requirements for my pet to obtain an ID tag?

We’re glad you asked. Think of them as your pet's pass for their ID tag. Before getting that shiny tag, make sure your pet is microchipped and completely up-to-date on his/her vaccinations. According to the law, your furry companion must be equipped with a microchip along with being vaccinated against rabies vaccination to become an official member of the Dubai Municipality's pet community.

Remember, this registration process happens annually, along with the renewal of their vaccinations, too. Dogs get their Dhppi/L and Rabies shots, while cats require vaccinations against Flu/Enteritis and Rabies.

In addition to their rabies vaccination, you would also need to ensure that it’s not past its expiration date. In other words, it must be administered within the past year and still be valid when you register for the tag.

Lastly, it is essential that your pet is microchipped in order to receive any vaccines, and thereby be applicable to register for an ID.

What additional considerations should I keep in mind?

First, let’s clarify that it's not just about complying with regulations; it's about protecting your furry pal from nasty diseases. Stay on top of your pet's vaccination schedule because a healthy pet is a happy pet. And while we’re on this, it’s essential to ensure that their microchipping is taken care of for that extra layer of security. A few other areas to consider would be the following:

  • First things first, bring your Emirates ID or your passport with a valid UAE visa.
  • Next up, your pet's vaccination card! Make sure it proudly showcases those up-to-date annual vaccinations and the tiny hero known as the microchip. It's like your pet’s superhero squad in a little card!
  • Last, to get your pet registered, you need to be a resident and show proof to support it.

So, gather your documents, keep your pet's records in order, and let the fun begin!

What’s the registration process and how do I do this?

Once you have all the necessary documents, it's time to visit the municipality office. You will be connected to the Smart Government website and asked a series of questions that include information about you, your address, and your email, along with supporting documents. Following this, the next set of questions will revolve around the specifics of your pet including breed, sex, age etc., and once this is complete, ta-da, your pet is officially registered within the Dubai pet community!

This visit will end with them taking your pet's photo with a simple hand-over of the coveted tag. It’s really just as simple as this however, if you feel like this might be a bit much and you require support to help get your pet settled in, feel free to reach our experts at bookings@sandypaws.ae to have this handled, seamlessly

How long exactly does the registration process usually take in Dubai?

All in good time! The registration process is variable, however, based on experience and on average, this can take a mere couple of days to a few weeks, so be prepared to remain patient until it comes through.

Should my pet always wear the tag, or can I keep it with me?

Let's be clear: your pet's tag is not a part-time accessory for you to borrow! Your furry friend should proudly always wear their tag – just like a badge of honor to ensure that should they be lost; they can always be found. Dogs found without one will be fined for the lack of it – the same doesn’t quite apply for cats but either way, always keep it on them - trust us, your pet will thank you for it!
